On April 6th, 2013, I was at home listening to the Civil Wars when I saw that @art_is_Homeless followed me on Twitter. It appeared they were two Miami high school students. I clicked on their website to discover a viewbook containing powerful photographs of the homeless in their city. The poignancy of the Civil Wars’ ‘I Want You Back’ playing in the background emphasized the power of these images that were disturbing yet beautiful, hard hitting yet infused with optimism. I went on to read about their cause which involved inspiring other students to raise awareness about homelessness through artistic expression: ‘photography, film/video, paintings, poems, dance/ballet’. However, one thing was missing from their commentary: music.

Keep On Walking was born.

The music video has been created in collaboration with artishomeless.com who provided the photographs from their viewbook. I hope this video will stir the same emotions I felt when first seeing these images and, like me, make you think about donating time, money or creativity to building awareness of homelessness. ‘Building awareness is the foundation for action, and your action can bring about change’ (artishomeless.com).  And this is where you come in: 50% of the song’s proceeds will go to Miami’s Camillus House.

Keep on Walking was released today on Bandcamp. Exclusive to Bandcamp will be a PDF Digital Booklet and a photo taken yesterday evening at Turtle Tone studios where we mastered the song for today’s release.

The song will go live on iTunes, Amazon and GooglePlay  on the weekend and hopefully Spotify on 18th April, 2014. Deezer, Beats Music and Rdio will stream towards the end of April but stay tuned for exact dates.

A special thanks to Bandcamp who allowed me to include a PDF Digital Booklet with the song, a freebie normally only allowed for album releases.

I saw a picture speak a thousand words
Without even breathing it was revealing
A mirror that was shaped with endless curves
In a silhouetted frame that bore my name

Hear me calling, don’t you dare look away

I’m trying hard to find a way to get myself out of this place
That’s kept me down so long
At times I feel like giving up but then I see a glimmer
And I know it can’t be wrong

To keep on walking, if I don’t and stop
The ground below me will try to swallow me right up
Just keep on walking, till I reach the higher ground
And maybe then I will find that I can be someplace that finally feels home

A vacant look reflected in her eyes
This could have been me, and this could have been you
A young girl that will age before her time
Oh brother, we need to spare more than a dime

Keep on walking, if I don’t and stop
The ground below me will try to swallow me right up

Just keep on walking, till I reach the higher ground
And maybe then I will find that I can be someplace that finally feels home

Know that you will find I’m not the kind to walk away
If you take my hand then know that I am here to stay

Keep on walking, just keep on walking, we’ll find a better way
