Picking up an electric guitar has sparked something new in me. Old songs are sounding different, and I want to rediscover them. So I thought you might like to discover them too.
I’ve given it a name: the Rough Diamond Sessions - uncut, stripped-down performances of already-released songs. Anytime you see it mentioned, you’ll know the song is also on your favourite listening platform.

Try Coming Round unfolds a conversation between an optimist and a cynic. I loved playing this because I felt power in the silence between notes. Would you agree?

Working on 'Midnight Waves' again. I already have four or five parts, but songs have this way of opening new doors each time you return to them. Should this one keep drifting as an instrumental, or evolve into a song with lyrics?

It once carried strings, but because I was forced to reset my computer it’ll be a few days before I can reinstall those libraries. Let me know if you would ever like to hear it with strings.

I’ve been easing back into my setup after a majo

I’ve been easing back into my setup after a major reset, reinstalling effects one by one so I can spot any issues as they come up. Today, while still smitten with this beautiful budget electric guitar, I tested the CLA Vocals plugin from Waves. Home vocals are never the final word, but they help give Steve a clear sense of where I’m headed—and by now we know each other well enough to take that starting point and move it forward.

Rather than try it on a new song, I wanted to strip everything back—just guitar and vocals—on a track you haven’t heard yet, one that’s already been recorded. I’m tempted to start sharing songs you may not know, alongside freshly recorded ones and even songs that are still waiting to be born. Sometimes the joy lies in hearing them bare: just voice, just guitar.

Back in the home studio after a few quiet weeks, and it feels good to share some new ideas. In just 10 days I’ll be recording with Steve, and we’ll be working on two songs.

Discovering TC Electronics pedals has opened up a whole new world of sound for me. Since I’ve barely touched electric guitar until now, I feel like a thirsty student trying to express exactly what I feel through these songs.

This budget Fender Squier might be simple, but playing it straight—without an amp or Logic—really shows off the character of the effects. The shimmer reverb is my favourite: it brings to mind ambient textures, atmospheric ballads, and even something fast and furious.
